Celebrating Tasmanian thoroughbred racing

**EMBARGOED UNTIL 10PM TONIGHT**

Tasmania’s high achieving thoroughbred horses, trainers, jockeys, and breeders were recognised tonight at the 2020 Annual Tasmanian Thoroughbred Awards.

Held at Ladbrokes Park Elwick in Hobart, the evening also included the announcement of five new members of the State’s Racing Hall of Fame.

It was a great opportunity to recognise the achievements of thoroughbred racing in racing season 2019/2020, while also recognising the difficult period for the industry caused by the impact of COVID-19. The extraordinary resilience and passion of those within the industry was critical to the seamless return of racing in June.

The prestigious Ladbrokes Tasmanian Racehorse of the Year award was shared between the champion mare Mystic Journey and the Sydney feature winning gelding The Inevitable. Their connections, including their respective trainers Adam Trinder and Scott Brunton, did a terrific job successfully campaigning these star racehorses in some of Australia’s very best races.

This year’s inductees into the Tasmanian Racing Hall of Fame were announced at the awards. All have contributed significantly to enrich the fabric of Tasmanian thoroughbred racing and are part of our proud history:

  • Terry Roles – former Deloraine based trainer who trained the winner of five Tasmanian Grand National Steeplechases
  • Sheet Anchor – Tasmanian-bred winner of the 1885 Melbourne Cup.
  • Ross Fouracre – Long serving secretary of the Tasmanian Racing Club
  • Trevor Jones – One of Australia’s leading jumps jockeys in the 1950s, 60s and 70s
  • Anzaas – A winner of multiple feature races including the 1981 Launceston Cup

Other award winners included:

  • 3YO Horse of the Year - Still A Star
  • 2YO Horse of the Year - Gee Gee Josie
  • Leading Racemare or Filly – Mystic Journey
  • Leading Tasmanian-based sire – Wordsmith (Gee Gee Horse Stud)
  • Leading Tasmanian-based juvenile sire - Wordsmith (Gee Gee Horse Stud)
  • Leading Broodmare – God Bless Us (Armidale Stud)
  • Leading Trainer - Scott Brunton
  • Leading Jockey - Craig Newitt
  • Leading Apprentice Jockey - Scarlet So

  • Welfare Award - Luella Meaburn
  • Industry Appreciation Award - Kathy Hill

The Tasmanian Government is a strong supporter of Tasmania’s racing industry that contributes more than $100 million to the local economy every year with more than 5,500 people either employed or direct participants in the industry.
