New allowance introduced to help boost hospital pharmacist workforce

The Tasmanian Liberal Government continues to take strong action to attract and retain our valuable health workforce, with all existing and new pharmacists working in our public hospitals to receive a new market allowance of $10,000 per year (pro rata).

The $10,000 per annum market allowance has been approved in accordance with the Allied Health Professionals Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022, for registered pharmacists employed across the Tasmanian Health Service including in Statewide Hospital Pharmacy.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Guy Barnett, said this targeted measure is designed to help boost the workforce and address the issue of a shortage of hospital pharmacists.

“Increasing our healthcare workforce is a significant commitment under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future,” Minister Barnett said.

“We highly value the important work that pharmacists perform in our hospital system, and their vital role in supporting patient care and safety which is why we are acting to attract more.

“The new $10,000 market allowance will be paid to all existing and new pharmacists employed across the Tasmanian Health Service including in the Statewide Hospital Pharmacy.

“The introduction is designed to assist with recruitment and retention for pharmacists in our hospitals.

“We anticipate this will help to fill current vacancies and boost the workforce, enabling us to enhance the pharmacy services provided in our hospitals and help meet the demand for new initiatives, such as Hospital in the Home.”

The market allowance would be implemented effective from 1 July 2024.

The Government is continuing to consider other initiatives that could further boost the pharmacy workforce in Tasmania.
